The Check Mark in Google Sheets is a “Tick” mark symbol that is inserted next to a cell value in a dataset containing tasks to be performed, that indicates whether the task is done or not. It is different from the Checkbox in Google Sheets. The Check Mark/Tick (✓) In Google Sheets expresses the concept of “Yes”, “Work Done” or “Task Complete”.
For example, consider the data table with the list of fruits to be bought from a fruit stall. Let us check all the fruits bought using the Google Sheets Check Mark.

Select cell B2, insert a “Checkbox” and copy-paste it to the remaining cells, i.e., cells B3 to B6. Now, “Check Mark” or Tick all the fruits bought, as shown below.

The output shows that the fruits in the cells A2, A4:A6 were bought and Cell A3 fruit is not bought or is still pending to buy.

Method #1 – Using Tick box (with an example)
Consider the dataset that consist of the MS office professional package details. It has the applications included in the software and some are not needed. We will check the application software included in the package using the Tick box.

The steps to insert Check Mark in Google Sheets using Tick Box are as follows,
Step 1: Select all the cells where we want to insert the Checkbox or the Tickbox, here, B2:B11 – go to the “Insert” tab – select the “Checkbox” option, as shown below.

The Tickbox is inserted, as shown below.

Step 2: Check Mark all the apps available in the MS package to get the followingoutput.

The corresponding cells checked indicate that only the Check Marked ones are available in the package.
Method #2 – Using Data validation (with an example)
The dataset below consists of school supplies and we will use Data validation to Check or Uncheck the Checkbox for items available or not.

The steps to insert Check Mark in Google Sheets using Data Validation are as follows,
Step 1: Select cells B2:B9 – go to the “Data” tab – select the “Data Validation” option, as shown below. The “Data validation rules” window appears at the right side, click the “Add rule” option.

Step 2: In the “Data validation rules” window, select the “Checkbox” option from the available options in the “Criteria” drop-down and select the “Done” option, as shown below.

It inserts the Checkboxes in the dataset, as shown below.
Step 3: Check Mark the required data, to get the following output, indicating that all the school supplies are available.

Method #3 – Using CHAR function (with an example)
The dataset below consists of vegetables and we will use CHAR function with 2 or more Unicode’s to insert the Checkbox or the Tickbox.
So far in the article, we learnt the methods to insert interactive tickboxes, where we can Check or Uncheck them. However, when we use the Char function, the Check Marks inserted or non-interactive. It’s as good as an image.

The steps to insert Check Mark in Google Sheets using Char function are as follows,
Step 1: Select cells B2, enter the formula =Char(9745). Press “Enter” and drag the formula from cell B2 to B7 using the fill handle, to get the following results.

Step 2: Select cell C2. Enter the formula =Char(128505), press “Enter” and drag the formula from cell C2 to C7 using the fill handle, to get the following results.

Step 3: Select cell D2. Enter the formula =Char(9989), press “Enter” and drag the formula from cell D2 to D7 using the fill handle, to get the following results.

If we do not want the checkboxes, we have codes for only tick marks as given below.

Method #4 – Using Check Mark as images
The steps to Using Check Mark as images are as follows:
Step 1: Create an image of a Check Mark. We already have a created image and have saved it on desktop in the name “Check Mark Image”.

Step 2: Select cell B4 to insert the image. Select the “Insert” tab – click the “Image” option right-arrow à select the “Insert image in cell”, as shown below.

Step 3: The “Insert image” window appears, as shown below. Go to the next step.

Step 4: Click the “Browse” option and select the location of the image.

We get the output shown below. It inserts the Check Mark in the selected cell.

Method #5 – Using Draw Check Mark (with an example)
The dataset given below consists of some movies that have sequels and we will Draw Check Mark.

The steps to Using Draw Check Mark are as follows:
Step 1: Select cell B2 – select the “Insert” tab – click the “Drawing” option, as shown below.

Step 2: The “Drawing” window appears with an empty canvas. Use the tools available to draw a Check Mark, as shown below, or as required.

Step 3: Click the “Save and close” option on the top right corner of the “Drawing” window. The image appears on the worksheet. Adjust it to fit into the required cell, as shown below.

Method #6 – Using Shortcuts
The keyboard shortcut keys to insert Check Marks in Google Sheets is “Alt+I+X”, i.e., we must first press the keys Alt+I, thenleave I and press the key X, while still holding the “Alt” key.

With this method we again get an interactive Tickbox.
Method #7 – Using Special Characters in Google Docs
The steps to insert Check Mark in Google Sheets using the Special characters in Google Docs are as follows:
Step 1: Open an existing or new Google Docs file – select the “Insert” tab – click the “Special characters” option, as shown below.

Step 2: The “Insert special characters” window appears. Here, type “check” in the search field, as shown below.
[Note: Below the search field, there is a drawing area where we can draw the required Check Mark.]

Step 3: We have various Tickbox, ticks or checkmarks options on the left side that are the search results for the word “Check”. Click the required character to insert in the document for every click, as shown below.

Now, we can copy the special character and paste it in the Google Sheets as desired.

- The color of the Tickbox can be changed.
- Check Marks are commonly used to fill out surveys or application forms.
